In the 1990’s, a small independent studio in Melbourne pitched a truly original idea for an animated series. With support from the Australian Children’s Television Foundation, Viskatoons created Li’l Elvis Jones and the Truckstoppers. A groundbreaking production for its time, the series became a huge success in Australia and Europe. Viskatoons and the ACTF have now thrown their support behind the re-imagining of the work as a stage musical, licensing the exclusive adaptation rights to Writers Republic and Mad About Theatre.

This joint venture between Writers Republic and Mad About Theatre represents a culmination of more than 30 years of combined experience in theatrical production, and the most exciting project of both companies to date, as they build an Australian production to capture the imagination of whole new generation of children. Boasting a national team of established creatives, the work reimagines the iconic themes of Country, characters and music for contemporary audiences in a two hour musical theatre production for the whole family.

With funding already secured for the first round of creative development, this project is seeking funds to support the next stage of workshops and preview showings. Funds raised through the Australian Cultural Fund will be put towards the costs of technical and set design, cast and musician costs, required to mount the first versions of the work in 2024 for industry preview and audience testing. The work is build upon a network of passionate arts supporters, people for whom inspiration is found in seeing great Australian work imagined, invigorated and and remembered throughout the generations.
